Prabhas-starrer Baahubali-2 has not waned yet. After Nandankanan zoo authorities here recently named a tiger cub after Baahubali, the Keonjhar district police started making an effort to raise traffic awareness through the biggest Indian blockbuster.
On Friday, the official Twitter handle of Keonjhar SP (@spkeonjhar) ) posted Prabhas's war-clad photograph and spread the message for bikers to wear helmet. "Just like the Baahubali super hero wore war helmet in reel life, we appeal to bikers to wear helmets in real life. We hope the movie's photograph will inspire bikers about their own safety," SP (Keonjhar) Rajesh Pandit told TOI.
The district police chief said he will soon launch awareness campaigns and rallies in Keonjhar to sensitise commuters about traffic related rules. "We will also take the photographs of Baabubali-2 actor wearing war helmet and launch the campaign. Youth, mostly school and college students will be taught about traffic rules. Short films will be created to spread the awareness. Besides, street plays will be organised to drive home the point," Pandit said.
Though the Supreme Court made it mandatory for all states to strictly enforce helmet rule for bikers, its enforcement is abysmally poor in almost all districts. Bhubaneswar is perhaps the only city where compliance of helmet rule is nearly 80 percent.
Number of accidents and deaths increased in Keonjhar in the past two years. Official statistics said total 208 persons died in 481 accidents in the district in 2015. The road rages and deaths increased to 557 and 254, respectively last year. As many as 138 persons already lost their lives in 256 accidents in the first five months of this year. "At times we conducted mobile courts and penalised violators. In the past two years, over Rs 7 lakh fine was collected from traffic offenders," Pandit said.Local residents said police should strictly enforce the traffic norms in mineral-rich Keonjhar, where frequent movement of heavy vehicles has become a cause for concern. "When Indian cricketer Jasprit Bumrah became infamous for his no-ball in ICC Champions Trophy final, Jaipur police was quick to install his hoardings to raise traffic awareness. The Jaipur police dismantled the hoardings in view of Bumrah's discontentment. But we are happy that the district police has been inspired by Baahubali-2 to spread awareness," said Sanjay Pattnaik, a local resident.
