Nokia has announced that it will return to the mobile phone and tablet market. As part of an agreement covering branding and intellectual property rights, Nokia Technologies will grant HMD global Oy its global license. This will allow HMD to create Nokia-branded phones and tablets for the next ten years. In return. Nokia will receive royalty payments from HMD for sales of the products. Further, the new portfolio of devices will be powered by Google’s Android OS. HMD has also acquired the rights to use the Nokia brand on feature phones, as well as certain design rights from Microsoft. The transaction with Microsoft is expected to close by the second half of 2016. Ramzi Haidamus, president of Nokia Technologies stated, “Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Nokia brand in an industry where Nokia remains a truly iconic name. Instead of Nokia returning to manufacturing mobile phones itself, HMD plans to produce mobile phones and tablets that can leverage and grow the value of the Nokia brand in global markets. Working with HMD and FIH will let us participate in one of the largest consumer electronics markets in the world while staying true to our licensing business model.” HMD plans to invest more than $500 million over the next three years to market the Nokia-branded products. In addition, Nokia will be a part of the Board of Directors of HMD and will set “mandatory brand requirements and performance related provisions”. This is to ensure that the products match up to Nokia’s own expectations of theirdevices. Last year, Nokia CEO, Rajeev Suri, had said that the company is planning to licence the brand in 2016.

The invite however points to the presence of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC on the Lenovo Zuk Z2, just like the Lenovo Zuk Z2 Pro, indicating there will be two processor variants at launch. To recall, the Zuk Z2 Pro came in two variants, based on memory and storage configurations. It was available in a 4GB of RAM + 64GB inbuilt storage variant, as well as a 6GB of RAM + 128GB storage variant. The Zuk Z2 Pro runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box with ZUI 2.0 skin on top. It features a 5.2-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) resolution Super Amoled 2.5D curved glass display and is powered by the flagship quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor clocked at 2.15GHz, with Adreno 530 GPU. The smartphone sports 13-megapixel rear camera with Isocell sensor, phase detection autofocus or PDAF, a pixel size of 1.34um, an f/ 1.8 aperture, and a dual-tone LED flash module, along with an 8-megapixel front-facing camera with f/ 2.0 aperture and pixel size of 1.4um. The Zuk Z2 Pro supports 4G LTE networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS, and USB 3.1 Type-C. A 3100mAh battery backs the handset and supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 as well.
