Kapoor And Sons :: Movie Review

After a long time Bollywood churns out an amazing family drama.

Kapoor and Sons is simple yet packed with some powerful acting and it is the kind of a family drama that will surely leave it's mark on the audience. Director, Shakun Batra and the Producer of the film, Karan Johar have created a compelling world in the film which is brilliant and yet believable.

The story is about two brothers who return home to the scenic hill-station of Coonoor to visit their sick grandfather, played by Rishi Kapoor.

Fawad Khan plays the role of Rahul Kapoor, a successful novelist and the blue-eyed boy of the family. He is sweet, sincere and loving. On top of that he is hot too according to Tia (Alia Bhatt). Like all the other characters in the film, Rahul too has a vulnerable side.

Sidharth Malhotra on the other hand plays the role of Arjun Kapoor, an outcast or a pariah of sorts in the Kapoor clan. He is an under-achiever and has some long standing issues to deal with. Alia Bhatt stars as Tia, the charming and affable female lead of the film. One complaint with Alia's role is that she didn't have a lot to do in the film.

The scenes with both the Kapoor brothers are simply wonderful. Their jealousy, their rivalry and the sibling love is perfectly captured between them.

Every actor in the film has done a tremendous job including Ratna Phatak and Rajat Kapoor. Ratna Pathak plays the atypical bollywood mom and Rajat Kapoor, the menace of a man. They brought a very unique craft to the table which perfectly suited their roles. Some of the scenes with these two actors were the real highlights of the film.

Rishi Kapoor manages to shine as the Grandpa in the movie. Though it was surreal to see him as a 90-year old with his make-up on but he delivers an intense performance as the quirky Grandpa who spends his time either on his Ipad or either playing dead.

Every character in the movie has some issues and dark secrets. Thankfully every character has some grey in them and not the usual backstory about them. The film also captures the expectations of a family and the intricacies surrounding those expectations.

The dinner table squabbles or arguments are very realistic in nature and are not over-cooked. One scene where everyone is quarreling and the plumber is fixing the the bathroom leak is pretty funny too.

The first half of the film does feel a bit generic and slow in terms of the plot but second half of the film in a cliched term is a complete emotional roller-coaster ride. This is where the story comes together and the performances reach their peak.

Kapoor and Sons might not be everyone's film but it is for those who prefer a new-age subtle Bollywood family drama.
