Ilayathalapathy’ (Young Commander) as the name rightly suggests, Vijay is turning out to be the true successor of Superstar Rajinikanth at the world wide box office for Tamil films. Vijay’s recent film ‘Theri’ is doing amazing business across the globe and he is the unanimous choice for Sify Star of the Month (April).

If we look at the statistics, in many territories either Theri has breached a previous record of Rajinikanth or stands right below the veteran’s film, which is indeed a phenomenal achievement by Vijay. A distributor says “In Coimbatore, Theri has got a distributor share of 9.5cr. Summer holidays and Vijay’s star power are the major reasons for the film’s massive success. Also, with Theri, we happened to see the family and kids’ crowd, which is a regular for Ilayathalapathy’s films and they are his biggest strength”. What really works for a minimum guarantee Vijay film is that he got a tremendous fan following, which would give phenomenal opening and if the movie is really good, family too are willing to see his film and as a result, the box office number shoots up. If we look at the current leading heroes in Tamil Nadu, they either got huge young fans or family audiences but after Rajinikanth, only Vijay has got both the audiences in right proportion. Interesting fact is that in Tamil Nadu distributor share, Vijay has got three (Thuppakki, Kaththi, Theri) 40cr+ share movies while his competitors are finding extremely difficult to catch up with him. For, Ajith Vedhalam is a 40cr+ share movie in TN while other young actors are yet to join the club. “We are expecting 45-50 cr distributor share for Theri in Tamil Nadu, the film has successfully surpassed Vijay’s previous best Thuppakki and Kaththi”, says a source in the trade. × After Tamil Nadu, Kerala is Vijay’s fort where Theri is said to have grossed more than 15crs and stands next to Shankar’s ‘I’, which is the highest for a Tamil film at Mollywood box office. If we look at worldwide box office, Theri has done a whopping business that the movie grossed more than 44cr. In UK, Theri has surpassed Rajinikanth’s Sivaji record and ranks below Endhiran by grossing £ 400,448. Despite the output, Vijay films constantly get good opening in UK and among the top 15 highest grossing Tamil movies in UK, Vijay has got seven films in the chart. In Australia, Theri has broken Endhiran’s record by grossing A$393,265 and in North America, the film has become Vijay’s first one million dollar movie and as of now, it stands at number 8 among all Tamil movies in the country. But unlike Rajinikanth, Ilayathalapathy is not consistent in giving hits. If we look at Vijay’s last six films, Thuppakki was a blockbuster and after that, the actor gave two average flicks—Thalaivaa and Jilla, then came another blockbuster, Kaththi, which was followed by the box office dud Puli and now, again a blockbuster with Theri. Now, Vijay has chosen director Bharathan for his next film, who has already given a flop venture, Azhaghiya Tamizh Magan with the actor and this has surprised everyone in the trade. Having said that, Bharathan can prove us wrong with Vijay 60 but fans of Vijay and trade people want the actor to work with promising names in the industry and provide continuous hits!
