Ae Dil Hai Mushkil In Trouble As Cinema Owners Refuse To Screen Films With Pakistani Artists
The Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Association of India (COEAI) recently announced that movies featuring Pakistani actors won’t be screened in theaters in the country.

The decision comes ahead of the scheduled release of Karan Johar’s “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil“, which stars Pakistani actor Fawad Khan.

While it was slated to hit the screens on October 28, the COEAI decision has cast doubts if it will see the light of the day any time soon.

COEAI President Nitin Datar said after a meeting of members: “It was decided that keeping in mind the patriotic feelings and national interest, we have requested all member exhibitors to refrain from screening movies which have involvement of any Pakistani artiste, technician, director or music director.

“We are also in the process of requesting other associations connected with the film industry to support the sentiments in the best interest of our nation,” he added.

The decision comes amid India-Pakistan tensions following a terror attack which killed 19 Indian soldiers. The Indian Army then carried out surgical attacks on terrorist launch pads in Pakistani territory.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena had earlier warned Pakistani actors to quit India.

After the ban by the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (IMPPA) on Pakistani artists working in India, the Cinema Owners Exhibitors Association of India (COEAI) has requested all theater owners (read exhibitors) to not screen any films starring Pakistani actors in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, and Karnataka, beginning with Karan Johar’s Diwali release, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

Citing that the decision was not taken under any political pressure but keeping the public sentiment in mind, COEAI’s president, Nitin Datar, said, “Today, the meeting of Cinema Owners Exhibitors Association of India took place, and it was decided that keeping in mind the patriotic feelings and the national interest of our country, we request all our members and exhibitors to refrain from screening movies which have involvement of any Pakistani artist, technicians, directors, music directors etc.”

Speaking about the other states that don’t fall under the COEAI, Datar added, “The association is not going to screen any movie and the decision implies from today until things don't get normal. States included under the association are Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa. We are also in the process of requesting other associations connected with the film industry to support the sentiments in the best interest of our nation.”

Now coming down to the actual facts, the COEAI’s decision is likely to have no bearing on either the release or fortunes of ADHM because the association has no legal authority to enforce a ban, and cannot insist that theater owners heed their decision, even those that belong to the states they preside over. Moving on, most theater owners from the states that fall under the COEAI’s jurisdiction don’t follow their guidelines, and instead, adhere to those by another all-India body.

Finally, their decision, however unbinding, is highly unfair considering that films like ADHM and Raeeshad cast and shot with Pakistani actors long before the relations between the two countries soured irreparably. On a side note, if the COEAI is so sure about how the public sentiment is at this point in time, why not allow the films to release, and allow the people the decide if they’d watch the film or not?
