    Vanamagan review-Enjoyable romantic entertainer

Director Vijay is known for conquering the audiences heart with basic human goodness and purity of love in his films. These are formulas he’s employed to great success in previous films. In Vanamagan, Vijay has perfectly added all the necessary commercial ingredients and at the same time, he makes sure that his classy touch and screenplay nuances are perfect.

Kavya (Sayyeshaa) is a extremely rich girl who lives in the materialistic world that she does not care about anyone's emotions and need. She is a poor little tycoon whose parents passed away in an accident and is being brought up by her guardian and father's friend (Prakash Raj), who looks after her business empire.

When Kavya visits a deep forest area near Andaman and Nicobar to celebrate New Year party, her car hits a tribal (Jayam Ravi). But her friends run away from the new found tribal, Kavya cares for him, she even names him Vaasi!

Slowly, Vaasi gets adapted to the urban world but he also subtly teaches the importance of human relationships and love to Kavya. But things turn upside down when her guardian tries to get her married to his son (Varun).

When Varun forces Kavya to marry him in a fit of animal rage, Vaasi beats him to pulp. The result is police arrest and they send Vaasi back to Andamans. When Kavya goes in search of Vaasi, she comes to know that the cops and her guardian destroyed several tribal people to occupy their land. The rest of the film is all about how Kavya gives back the land to the tribal people and saves Vaasi from her powerful uncle.

On the downside, Vanamagan has plenty of logical loopholes and a familiar plot but what makes the film interesting is the purity of love that exists between Jayam Ravi and Sayyeshaa.

Make no mistake, Jayam Ravi is the sole draw of this film, and he works hard for his top billing. The actor is in terrific form turning on his infectious charm. Kudos to Ravi for understanding the importance of the script, underplaying his part and allowing the heroine to steal the show. But at the end, he stands tall for his outstanding performance. Sayyeshaa is a promising find, dances like a dream and has the screen presence. Her lip sync is flawless and her expressions are real for a debutante.

Thambi Ramaiah is another big plus of Vanamagan, his comic one liners work while Prakash Raj and Varun are just okay. Sam Paul is impressive as police officer.

Though the first half of the film moves at rapid pace, there is a lag in the flash back and pre-climax stunt, which goes over the top but Vijay compensates with the emotional quocient in the end.The basic thread of the film is taken from Hollywood film George Of The Jungle and theme is that of Avatar.

Technically, Vanamagan is brilliant, thanks to the stellar cinematography of Thirru, who captures both the urban and forest life with great elan. Of late, Vanamagan is easily one of the best albums of Harris Jayaraj and songs have been beautifully picturised. The VFX portion involving the tiger has also been pulled off well by the team and it deserves special applause. Ravi's make up by National award winner Pattanam Rasheed is top notch.

Vanamagan has its own flaws but it's sure to entertain kids and family audiences. In short, the film is an enjoyable romantic entertainer.

    Vanamagan Movie Review

    CRITIC'S RATING: 2.0/5
    AVG READERS' RATING: 1.8/5

Vanamagan is initially amusing, to an extent, because director Vijay unabashedly plays to the gallery. He uses the over-the-top performance of Jayam Ravi for comic effect, and for a while, the film feels like a mild diversion.

But the problem is that there’s hardly anything fresh, and the second half exposes the hollow, unimaginative script. This is shocking given how Devi(L) continued to surprise us within its horror comedy genre conventions. There are also inconsistencies in the film’s own internal logic. We are never told why Kavya, who doesn’t mind letting plates of food go waste or doesn’t grant leave to a servant for his son’s marriage (instead she arrogantly gives him money), decides to take the injured Jara to Chennai. Similarly, Jara is shown as an animal, but in the second half, we see that the tribal community has its own set of values and customs.

Vijay keeps reaching for beats that we know are going to be hit, and this robs the film of excitement. Consider a chase inside the forest in the second half. We get everything we have seen in numerous film — a cliffhanger, a duet, a spy bird, a comic character (Thambi Ramaiah, in his grating mode), a wild animal that shows it gratitude for the hero, and a character revealing his actual intention after deceiving a well-meaning one.

A CGI tiger and Tirru’s visuals, which let us feast on the lush locales, are the film’s notable achievements. If only had the care that seems to have gone into choosing the exotic locales went into the script as well...

Vanamagan Review {2/5}: The movie is initially amusing, but the second half exposes the hollow, unimaginative script.

Probably Jayam Ravi's lowest opener since Sakalakala Vallavan (Appatakar) .

After a low opening, Vanamagan finds comfort with family audience on Day 2, an improvement over Day 1 though the clash with AAA 1D has already done enough damage as far as opening is concerned .

    VANAMAGAN MOVIE REVIEW

Director Vijay, after his last venture Devi on the ‘spirit’ed activities of an actress, moves to a subject which has a social message in his film Vanamagan. Regular followers of films would know that this story is about tribal(s) and city-dweller(s).

It is a sad thing that, in the name of globalization, we are savagely raping our natural resources, the results of which are already being felt in various ways. In this story of Vijay, he does touch upon this subject along with regular commercial elements.

What happens when a man who is completely untouched by the ways of civilization is forced to enter this domain? The answer to this is narrated in the first half of the film which gives a few lighter moments and also a kind of smooth slithering of the story into the second half. In fact, the first half is enjoyable where the characters get established and we also get a few chuckle-worthy scenes between Jayam Ravi, Sayesha and Thambi Ramaiah. Ravi demonstrates that the tribes know emotions better than their urban compatriots in the scene with VJ Ramya.

However, the film has its major drawback in the second half, which gets a little tedious with predictability and clichés. And when it nears the finish line, it is almost like we are jumping to exit the theatre.

Give Jayam Ravi any script or role and you can be assured that he is going to give more than his 100%. Vanamagan is no exception. With hardly a quarter page of words in the entire script, Ravi sashays his role smoothly like how he glides between the trees in the film with dexterity. Be it the action sequences or emotional ones, this actor is in his elements. For a debutante, Sayesha is good and is evident that she has understood her character well. Thambi Ramaiah delivers a templated performance and by now we are very familiar with his body language, counters or expressions.

This is a Vijay (director) film and hence there would not be any dearth of emotions and family sentiments. But you still wonder the presence of Thalaivaasal Vijay in this. The way in which Sayesha develops feelings for Ravi is well written. That said, towards the climax, the scenes are straight from so many films that we have seen.

The vast expanse of greenery or the rich interiors of the heroine’s abode, Tirru’s camera has captured them all in the best possible way. Harris Jayaraj’s songs continue to give us a déjà vu feel despite them being hummable. While a few are rightly placed, the song by the tribals appears to be unwarranted.

Totting it all up, Vanamagan does not have major complaints but needs more power to strike it big with the audiences.

Verdict: A very socially relevant subject that could have been executed better
