According to test results released by Global NCAP, the Volkswagen Polo is the safest hatchback its segment (the ‘A2 Compact’ segment, as per SIAM classification) in India. Volkswagen recently announced the fitment of dual front airbags as standard equipment on all versions of the Polo, in India. With dual front airbags, the Volkswagen Polo secured a 4-Star safety rating for adult occupant protection, in crash tests conducted by Latin NCAP. This is the highest safety rating for any car in the premium hatchback segment in the country.

Kerala: NGT bans diesel vehicles older than 10 years The National Green Tribunal (NGT) inaugurated it’s Special Circuit Bench in Kochi today and is already in the news. The Special Circuit Bench announced a ban on diesel vehicles that are more than 10 years old. The tribunal has ordered that a fine, amounting to Rs 5,000, in the form of environment compensation should be imposed if vehicles older than 10 years are found to be plying on the roads after a period of 30 days. The order also states that new vehicles with a displacement of more than 2000cc wouldn’t be registered. The rule would be applicable in cities such as Trivandrum, Kothamangalam, Thrissur and Kozhikode.
Camry Hybrid contributes to 90 percent of sales of the Camry nameplate in India. Post the reduction of VAT (Value Added Tax) on electric and hybrid vehicles from 25% to 12.5% under the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India), Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has reduced prices of the Toyota Camry Hybrid by INR 2.3 lakhs. The Camry Hybrid now costs INR 30.9 lakhs as compared to the regular Camry’s INR 30.28 lakhs price-tag (ex-Showroom, New Delhi). The Toyota Camry Hybrid is powered by a 2.5L engine with electric assistance. Launched in India in August 2013, the Camry Hybrid is assembled at TKM’s Bidadi plant alongside the regular Camry petrol. In 2013, only 15 percent of Camrys sold in India were hybrids, whereas in 2014 and 2015, this increased to 73 percent and 86 percent respectively. Now, the Camry Hybrid accounts for as much as 90 percent of Camry sales in India. In the January-April 2016 period, TKM sold 419 Camry Hybrids whereas only 44 units of the regular Camry. Aside from the Camry Hybrid, TKM also sells the Toyota Prius which is due for a full-model changeover. The Camry Hybrid and regular Camry are assembled in India at the Bidadi plant. The Toyota Camry Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder VVT-i engine assisted by a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a 6.5 Ah nickel-metal hybride battery pack. The combined system output stands at 205 PS with the hybrid getting an E-CVT gearbox and special low-rolling resistance tyres.

Toyota working on a new mini-MPV, likely to be called Calya Images that surfaced on the web suggest that the vehicle in the images is a new MPV from the house of Toyota, expected to be christened as the Toyota Calya. The model will be reportedly positioned as a LCGC (Low Cost Green Car) in Indonesia where it is expected to be launched first. The name ‘Calya’, which is said to be derived from Sanskrit, means ‘Perfect’ or ‘Flawless’.
Toyota joins forces with Uber, invests undisclosed amount in the app-based taxi service The Japanese car maker has invested in Uber through its unit Toyota Financial Services Corporation and Mirai Creation Investment Limited Partnership. Under the investment agreement, the two companies will create a leasing option for the participating drivers, who would be able to lease cars on convenient terms with Toyota. They would have the flexibility of paying the money back through their earnings from Uber. The two companies have released a joint statement about the development, though the specific details about the size of the investment are still unknown. Toyota’s investment in Uber goes well beyond just providing leasing facility to the drivers, but nothing specific towards that end has been spelled out.
