Camry Hybrid contributes to 90 percent of sales of the Camry nameplate in India.

Post the reduction of VAT (Value Added Tax) on electric and hybrid vehicles from 25% to 12.5% under the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India), Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has reduced prices of the Toyota Camry Hybrid by INR 2.3 lakhs. The Camry Hybrid now costs INR 30.9 lakhs as compared to the regular Camry’s INR 30.28 lakhs price-tag (ex-Showroom, New Delhi).

Launched in India in August 2013, the Camry Hybrid is assembled at TKM’s Bidadi plant alongside the regular Camry petrol. In 2013, only 15 percent of Camrys sold in India were hybrids, whereas in 2014 and 2015, this increased to 73 percent and 86 percent respectively. Now, the Camry Hybrid accounts for as much as 90 percent of Camry sales in India.

In the January-April 2016 period, TKM sold 419 Camry Hybrids whereas only 44 units of the regular Camry. Aside from the Camry Hybrid, TKM also sells the Toyota Prius which is due for a full-model changeover.

The combined system output stands at 205 PS with the hybrid getting an E-CVT gearbox and special low-rolling resistance tyres.

Toyota joins forces with Uber, invests undisclosed amount in the app-based taxi service

The Japanese car maker has invested in Uber through its unit Toyota Financial Services Corporation and Mirai Creation Investment Limited Partnership.

Under the investment agreement, the two companies will create a leasing option for the participating drivers, who would be able to lease cars on convenient terms with Toyota. They would have the flexibility of paying the money back through their earnings from Uber. The two companies have released a joint statement about the development, though the specific details about the size of the investment are still unknown. Toyota’s investment in Uber goes well beyond just providing leasing facility to the drivers, but nothing specific towards that end has been spelled out.
