According to a report by the Press Trust of India, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has passed an interim order in the NCR region to ban the registration of diesel powered vehicles, apart from non-renewal of registration for diesel vehicles older than 10 years. The report by PTI added that the interim order will be effective till January 6th which is the next scheduled date for the hearing of the case. The NGT is a specialized body that deals with environment issues across the country. The body also advised both the union government as well as the state government to refrain from using diesel vehicles.

Italian design house and coach builders Pininfarina are being eyed by Mahindra & Mahindra. Final talks are underway as we speak, and the Indian conglomerate hopes to seal the deal by the end of this year (2015).

However, the report also adds that all’s not in favour of Mahindra yet, as talks could still fall out. Discussions were pushed only recently by both ends, after reports that Pincar, Pininfarina’s controlling investor, was going to be liquidated because of doubts that an agreement could be reached between Pinifarina’s creditors and Mahindra.

Pininfarina, their honey dipped legacy not withstanding, is reportedly reeling under debts to the tune of €52.7 million (INR 375 Crore). According to the report by Automotive News, Mahindra & Mahindra has offered to settle the debts, apart from infusing new capital into the ailing design house.

The deal, if sealed, will mark Mahindra’s third major takeover in the automotive sector, following its acquisitions of South Korean carmaker Ssangyong and the scooter unit of French auto manufacturer PSA/Peugeot-Citroen. Pininfarina, which has a lineage that tails all the way back till 1930, with over a 100 Ferrari’s to its name, along with numerous Alfas, Lancias and Rollers, has already cooperated with Mahindra regarding the TUV300’s styling.

    Crash tests without using cars

The destructive form of automobile testing may soon be replaced by a virtual car crash testing tech. Crash tests are performed by New Car Assessment Program(NCAP) organizations around the world in order to ensure safe design standards. These tests study the crashworthiness and crash compatibility for various types of automobiles.

The crash tests carried out with actual cars endure damage through specifically designed accident scenarios, which often leave the vehicle broken for life. Hence, automakers have developed a new virtual tech which will eliminate the cost of crash test equipments and the bills of crashed vehicles.

Most of the vehicles and their parts are designed digitally, therefore using the same computer aided design (CAD) software several potential crash scenarios can be simulated on a computer. Further results can be obtained by running the digitally rendered cars into the software-created crash environments.

The new virtual crash tests are repeatable, peelable and variable. The crashes can be repeated without additional costs and setup time. Any portion of the cars can be peeled out or made invisible, in order to observe a new sub-assembly perform in a particular crash scenario. Also, the car components can be redesigned and tested again which may have failed in previous tests.

In development at the moment the virtual crash test technology can provide results accurate up to 90%. This virtual crash test tech has a lot to offer but is still away from actual use.
