Lexus mulling Indian entry with RX crossover and ES sedan

Lexus, Toyota’s flagship brand is mulling to enter the Indian market once again. While a definite time period of entry hasn’t been specified yet, a report puts it sometime in the last quarter of 2016 or early 2017. The report also adds that Toyota Kirloskar Motor had initially planned to showcase the Lexus brand in India at the upcoming Auto Expo (February 2016), but has dropped the plan now.

According to the report, Toyota plans to introduce Lexus brand in the Indian market through the launch of two models – the RX luxury crossover and the EX sports sedan. Sources close to the publication have mentioned that the company has already had discussions with several of its existing Toyota dealers to sell Lexus vehicles in the country, and is now trying to finalise its pricing strategy. It’s still not clear if the cars will be assembled locally or imported and sold in India as completely built units.

Back in 2013-14, Toyota had contemplated launching Lexus in India. It was almost ready for launch, but because of a steep depreciation in the rupee – which would have inflated the price in India – compelled the world’s largest carmaker to delay the plans.

A price hike was announced today by Skoda Auto India across its model range starting 1stJanuary 2016. The increase in prices varies from 2% to 3% across their entire portfolio. This amounts to an approximate increase by Rs. 14,000 to 50,000 depending on the model and variant. Skoda cited reasons such as increasing input costs and changing market conditions to justify the hike.

The billion dollar Mahindra Group has finally purchased the controlling stake in the iconic Italian brand in automotive and industrial design, Pininfarina. Following the acquirement of the South Korean carmaker Ssangyong and the scooter unit of PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, this deal marks Mahindra’s third major takeover in the automotive sector.

Founded 85-years ago by Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina, the Italian design house is a legendary styling brand best known for its stunning designs for Ferrari, GM, Peugeot and the Alfa Romeo. It has designed almost 1,000 cars across brands over the years. The Mahindra Group has bought 76% of the 85-year-old design house at a cost of 25.3 million euros (approximately Rs 186.64 crore). The acquisition will be carried out through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV).
