Producers of #UdtaPunjab tells SC that film has already been released overseas, pleads the court not to entertain NGO petition.

 

Udta Punjab has been in the wars with censor problems but will now release on Friday and this controversy which made big news has probably created extra awareness which should help the initial of the film. But as with heavy promotion, controversy can create hype and awareness but its hard to tell how much it is converting people to actually turn up to watch the film.



The film was looking to open well in the North even without the issues of the last week due to regional flavour and presence of Diljit Dosanjh which adds a bit extra especially in East Punjab. Now it remains to be seen how much of a boost comes in other parts, it will be in the metros like Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore mainly as despite the hype it will still be hard to pull in big numbers in B and C centres.



The important thing will be to get a clean release as the issue it faced was probably political rather than censor and these things also sometimes crop up when released. A clean release should mean a good number on day one.



The negative is probably that Shahid Kapoor films struggle to put up numbers. A R.. Rajkumar was just about decent but then whether its a Haider or Shaandaar the films just dont perform at the box office and it will be down to Udta Punjab to correct this.

 

Udta Punjab has taken an excellent start of 50% plus in Delhi city and East Punjab while other places range from good to average. Overall its a good opening in the 35% range driven by Delhi city, East Punjab and other metros like Mumbai and Bangalore. The initial is on par with a big film like Housefull 3 and only Fan (holiday) and Baaghi can be called better in terms of occupancy in morning shows.



The controversy with its release has aided the initial of the film. The collections in Delhi city and East Punjab could challenge the biggest opener of the year Fan as the morning collections there are on par with Fan even though Fan was a holiday.



The initial in the morning shows is actually the biggest ever for a Shahid Kapoor or Alia Bhatt film although its actaully by default as the controversy has helped and the North opening as far as face value goes will be because of Diljit Dosanjh who has a bigger following there.



Basically it will be about sustaining over the weekend and the film will be through, normally these type of films would work by growth but here the opening means just holding at these levels will be enough.

Dont know where to start.The movie is just awsome. The background music,the songs, the plot, the actors f**k every one of them were so good.Alia are u the same girl who debuted four years ago in that stupid all movie SOTY?She was just awsome as hell. Shahid u b***c*** this is how u should act or should i say live in a movie.Diljit too bhi rocking. Kareena didnt have much to do bt still she did it in a good way.The story was damn realistic.I think politics in censor board wanted to block the movie to protect the wrong doings of their political leaders.The statistics definitely adds up to what that is shown in the movie.Abd finally my hero ANURAG KASHYAP, without his solo fight against this sanskari CBFC the movie may not even be released in theatres.Come on guys lets make this movie fly higher than how it flies now.Despite the piracy issues i hope that its collection doesnot go down like our PREMAM did. Please watch it at theatres. Guys its definitly worth a watch.

This is huge! No, it’s bigger than huge! It looks like fate has had the final word in deciding the fortunes of Udta Punjab – a film mired in controversy since the past few weeks leading up to its release. But it seems like neither the CBFC’s rigidity toward the film nor the leaking of its print two days before the release could put a dent in its prospects of storming the domestic box-office. If anything, it seems that these factors only helped in enhancing the buzz around the movie.

As per early estimates, the film has taken a phenomenal opening in the morning shows across India. The opening in circuits like East Punjab and Delhi is around 65% while the remaining northern circuits, too, are running around 50% occupancy. In fact, when the dust settles, the opening-day figures in the North Indian territory could be the highest of the year so far. The casting of Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh, who’s a huge draw in these circuits, appears to have paid off big time.

The occupancy throughout the rest of India, particularly in other big circuits Mumbai and Bangalore is also steady around the 35-40% mark. Overall, the film is going strong at about a 40% occupancy throughout the country, which is on par with a much bigger, commercially viable film like Housefull 3 that was part of a successful franchise. Only Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan has a better occupancy rate this year, but Udta Punjab has surpassed both Fan and Housefull 3 in the North Indian circuits.

From uncertainty over whether it’ll see the light of day to piracy woes to taking a crackerjack start at the box-office – life has indeed come full circle for the cast and crew of Udta Punjab.
