Manamantha Review

Here comes yet another thought provoking film from the ‘director with a specialty,’ Mr. Chandra Sekhar Yeleti. His films till date, starting with “Aithe” to the latest “Sahasam“, are far from the routine formula. Now, he is back with yet another titled “Manamantha” starring Mohanlal and Gouthami. The film is a family and emotional drama, but with the special touch of Chandra Sekhar Yeleti.

The story line deals with the day to day experiences of four persons who come from the middle class. One is a family man, Mohanlal, playing a man named Sairam, working at a supermarket as an Assistant Manager– and how he struggles to get promoted to Manager. The next is Gouthami playing a middle-class wife named Gayatri, who struggles with finances, to make ends meet. Then there is the young graduate Abhiram, played by Viswant, who has issues with his love life. Finally, the kid Ramya Rao playing Mahitha, from a middle-class family again, who shows care and concern for an impoverished boy– to pay for his education.

The common thread one observes are the various struggles middle class families experience, living in the city. The drama that unfolds leaves the audience guessing, as the four stories run in parallel– leaving us to wonder as to how the stories will end. How do all the four lives come across each other and link up in the story? Will their struggles come to a happy end? Will they at least get better? Rest of the story deals with the answers which can only be known by watching the film.


The major strengths of “Manamantha,” undoubtedly is the story, expertise of Chandra Sekhar Yeleti and of course, the strong acting talents of Mohanlal and Gouthami. Mohanlal needs a special mention here, as he lives in the role of Sairam! Added to give more depth to the role was his own dubbing for the character by learning Telugu. Gouthami easily carried on as Gayatri and has shown convincing emotions in the character. Viswant and Ramya though new to acting have given their best.

The other great performance by Urvasi, seen as a friend of Gayatri, is the comic role with her accent and greedy nature. Anisha Ambrose plays the love interest of Abhiram and was fine. The dialogues penned by Ravichandra Teja carried the emotional quality greatly throughout the film. The small role of Gollapudi, seen after a long break will be remembered even after the film is over. All the technical departments did their best to give the audience a feel good experience.

On the whole, “Manamantha” is a slow paced family drama involving the audiences deep into the story and finally giving a small thrill and relief in the end. Fans of smooth family dramas will love the film! Total credit for this feels good film can be claimed by Chandrasekhar Yeleti, Mohanlal, and Gouthami for carrying it on their shoulders. Those who like emotional stories too can get drawn by watching “Manamantha.”
