Jack Wilshere says he’s sure a season at Bournemouth is the right choice for him after he was surprisingly allowed leave Arsenal on loan yesterday.

The 24 midfielder has struggled with injury in the past but after a good pre-season he featured in both the 0-0 draw with Leicester and the 3-1 win over Watford. Chances are he would have played some part against Liverpool if it weren’t for injuries to Aaron Ramsey and Alex Iwobi.

However, he felt he needed to play more regularly and has chosen to join Eddie Howe’s side for the 2016-17 campaign.

“I had a good chat with the manager and feel sure this is the best place for me to play and develop this season,” he said via a statement on his Twitter account.

“I would like to thank everyone at the club for making me feel so welcome. I am looking forward to working hard every day with the coaching staff and my new team-mates to help the club achieve success on the pitch.”

The Bournemouth boss is hoping the arrival of the England international can bring a new dimension to his team.

“Jack is obviously out there on his own with his profile and what we’ve attracted before, it’s a good deal and one that can work for both sides,” he said.

“He can complement our style of play and maybe add that missing piece to the jigsaw.”

 

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe has spoken about how Benik Afobe’s close relationship with Jack Wilshere played a part in the Arsenal midfielder’s move to the south coast on transfer deadline day.

Afobe and Wilshere are close friends, having grown up together in the Arsenal Academy, and although he considered other offers, the 24 year old plumped for the relatively smaller club in Bournemouth.

He was given a look around the club yesterday by Afobe and Bournemouth staff, and Howe told the Bournemouth echo of what an advantage that was.

He said, “It’s always useful for a player to know someone inside the camp and when you have a decision to make you can go to that person and ask honest questions and that player will give you honest feedback over the environment and how the club works.

“These are all the things the players want to know and they can find them out very quickly.

“It looks like Benik answered honestly and said good things because Jack decided to come.”

Wilshere had his first training session with his new club today.

There’s a lot of competition for places in the squad…

You can’t afford to rest on your laurels at all or you’ll instantly be on the bench. Every training session, every sprint, every exercise must be done to the best your ability.

Are you experiencing another level of football in London?

Everything happens on a higher plain than it did at Borussia Moenchengladbach or FC Basel. You become aware of the global perception of Arsenal when you’re on the tour of the USA. Everywhere we went there were huge crowds waiting, the size of the club is unmistakable.

Arsenal is luxurious…

Arsenal prepares the players in the best way. They pay attention to every detail. Everything from flights, food and service is done to optimise recovery.

Are there things behind the scenes that have surprised you?

Every Monday we’re asked to undertake jump tests, to check the conditions of our muscles. There’s nothing you can hide. Once a week they do urine tests and your body fat percentage is tested regularly. The doctors cover all bases.

Arsenal are much more in the public eye. Their performances are watched around the globe. Are you aware more than ever at being the centre of attention?

I was pretty exposed to this at Moenchengladbach. I haven’t needed to completely change my lifestyle in London. I continue to visit the restaurants that I like. There is indeed no reason to give everything up because I’m an Arsenal player. For me, the bigger problem is all the hype. I’ve never been in the gossip pages and hope that will remain so.

 

The debate about you playing for Kosovo has been rekindled, you’ve had to spend time addressing it…

I’m sick of having to repeatedly justify myself. You can’t imagine who exerts pressure all on one hand. My letter on Instagram [Xhaka published a letter in Albanian] should explain why I’ve decided to play on with Switzerland. When headlines are written because of a poor translation, it’s regrettable. What more can I say?

Your profile on the pitch is rising. The national team depends on you. Do you think Arsenal will rely on you similarly?

In England they’re aware of what I brought to the table in the Bundesliga. I think the players know that. They are likely to assume that a player who arrives with a €45 million price tag has two or three qualities.

After kicking off with two games without a win there was already some nervousness about Arsenal. The margins of victory are tight if the performance isn’t right…

I knew before I arrived that the pressure at a club that challenges for the title grows quickly. The season is long, we’ll become stronger with every game.

The Swiss national team is growing stronger year on year. Are you looking to improve even more during World Cup qualification?

I hope so, of course, even if I one day I could do with a quiet moment to reflect on everything that happened in France. It was my best spell playing for the national team. I still have the potential to improve in the long-term, I’ll work hard to get rid of my weaknesses.

What role are you going to play against the European champions Portugal [in Switzerland’s first World Cup qualifier]?

In France, I really felt for the first time that my teammates trusted me to run the game.

What do you anticipate happening against the European champions?

We want to measure ourselves against the best. It’s a highlight for us and the fans who want to see and play these types of games. We’ll continue to improve and grow. We have to get better by a few percent then I think we’ll enjoy an even better qualification campaign than last time.

Speaking to the Arsenal Magazine about the importance of having former players around the training ground – a topic that the likes ofEmmanuel Petit and Patrick Vieira have touched on recently – Wenger made clear he too firmly believes in the positive influence of having the club’s identity passed from generation to generation.

“Well, when you have an opportunity to give our former players a role at the club, they know Arsenal is about identity,” said Wenger.

“Identity is about values and the players who have played at the club for a long time know the values are important, not only on the playing side but on the moral side, so they can carry through the generations.

“It is important for this club and the history of this club.”

On Henry’s decision to leave Arsenal this summer, he added: “There was a lot of debate about Thierry Henry not staying here. I think Thierry Henry has done an exceptional job here but it is an uncomfortable position for him.

“He agreed that it was not easy for him to deal with talking about Arsenal during the weekend and then coming in. You want him to be free from his statements and it’s always difficult for him to be really objective sometimes, and even a bit harsh, and then come in and face the players.

“It will be easier for him and I’m sure that he will come back into coaching later.”
