Dilwale movie review: Shah Rukh Khan the romantic & Kajol the femme fatale entertain!

When Rohit Shetty decides to make a film with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, he infuses his brand of Fast and Furious kind of filmmaking with the chemistry of the most loved romantic pair in Bollywood. And that film is Dilwale. Is it worth a watch? Well, if you don’t mind Rohit’s fast cars, bright colours in almost every shot, a dash of slapstick humour as well as the romance of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol – this film is for you. Dilwale makes a rather awkward combination of Rohit and SRK’s brand of filmmaking, and a different one than Chennai Express, their first film together. But it is entertaining nevertheless!

We can safely say that Dilwale is a hotch-potch of several Hollywood films and even borrows the main theme from Romeo and Juliet. If not for SRK and Kajol, we would have probably given Dilwale a miss. So, why watch it? For the age-old but hot chemistry between SRK and Kajol that remains effective to this day and even has a reference to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, their most romantic cult film ever that inspired Dilwale itself. The two actors carry the weight of the film with ease, a film that has its moments where you see yourself yawn. In their individual scenes, too, they stand out and that is why they are known as legendary actors.

Kajol the femme fatale vs SRK the romantic gangster

Shah Rukh Khan (as Kali) looks hotter in his bearded look in Dilwale. And with that superbly toned, chiseled body – oh, boy! – was he a treat to watch! But then Kajol (as Meera) matches up to him with her refreshing new look. In the acting department, too Kajol beats Shah Rukh Khan in that one scene that will give you goosebumps! Kajol as the femme fatale will make you think – ‘Kajol ne rongte khade kar diye‘!

But sadly, this sexy femme fatale reminding us of Kajol’s award-winning performance as a murderer inGupt soon turns into a demure damsel. Shucks, blame Rohit Shetty and his scriptwriters for it! How we longed to see more of that deadly Kajol. But alas, we were cut short with her suddenly going week in the knees for the same hero she thinks took her out on a ‘stupid date’!

Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon – hot new pair?

And then there’s the very fresh chemistry of young and beautiful stars Varun Dhawan (as Veer) and Kriti Sanon (as Ishita), who are a perfect fit in their respective roles and could very well be the next hot pair to look out for in B-town!

Among the comics, Johnny Lever (as Mani) the veteran does not deliver the same cult performance he’d done in Baazigar, SRK-Kajol’s first film together back in the nineties. It is Sanjay Mishra who steals the show as Oscar Bhai. Varun Sharma as the young hero’s friend is good, while Mukesh Rishi in a lighter role as “Garibon ka Jackie Shroff” is not bad either.

Dilwale is a story between two people of rival mafia gangs falling in love each other, then out of love, and then in love again. There’s not much of a story here and some sub-plots have been included. But add to the proceedings the lovely locales of Bulgaria, the wonderful songs and some breathtaking cinematography, Dilwale is what you call a paisa vasool family entertainer that you can sit back and enjoy with your caramel and cheese popcorn and cola. The film may also have repeat value among youngsters, who probably will not view the opulent historical Bajirao Mastani more than once (maybe some will).

So, book your tickets for Dilwale and enjoy the ride – only don’t expect too much from this roller coaster. It will not give you too many memorable moments between Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.
