Arrival – A movie with an insight

I don't normally write reviews for English movies, but this movie deserves one.

Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival” is a science fiction thriller which is unique from the other counterparts of the same genre. It's a high-concept movie that may not appeal to the fans of movies along the lines of "Independence Day." It’s a very cerebral and thought provoking movie narrated non-linearly, which compels us to not miss any scenes right from the beginning.


The movie starts by showing the life of Dr.Louise Banks (Amy Adams) who is a world-renowned linguist, currently teaching in a university and is undergoing the trauma of losing her only child.. She is asked to decipher the language/sound emitted by aliens who appeared suddenly in 12 parts of the world. Ian (Jeremy Renner) joins her in the mission. Slowly they start to develop a bond with the aliens. American military and China are not patient enough to wait to figure out what Aliens are trying to say. They decide to blow the aliens out of the sky. The rest of the movie is a race between Louise, Aliens and warmongers. Will she be able to decipher the Alien’s language? Will humans kill the aliens? Or will Aliens attack her?

Jeremy Renner quotes Louise’s words (Amy Adams) when they meet for the first time in the movie “Language is the foundation of civilization; it is the first weapon”. I didn’t pay much attention to that then, but when the movie ended, it made me think, Isn’t she right? The words we choose, define our arguments even before we make them. You can’t truly have a conversation until you’re fluent in each other’s language — even if you’re both speaking English.

Amy’s clear-eyed, open-minded doctor forces us to ask how much we’re willing to communicate. Learning “Heptapodese” seems easy compared to the tough talks she need to have with the authorities. Villeneuve captured the feelings of today before we even felt them: that ominous quiet, that sense that the rules have changed, that haunting image of a scared civilian clutching a sign that reads, “Save our species.” - (Courtesy: Amy)

Verdict: must watch.
