Now the headline is something to wonder about when it comes to Malayalam cinema. Considering the less number of screens in Kerala compared to a Tamil Nadu or Andhra Pradesh, it’s not easy for the Malayalam film to make Rs 100 crores at the box office.Even if the film grosses Rs 10 crores at the box office, it is considered a superhit, even if the said movie has two biggest superstars, Mammootty or Mohanlal, in the lead, thanks to the limited budgets of the film (learn Bollywood learn). However with the tremendous business that Pulimurugan is eking out at the box office, there are talks that it would be the first film to enter the 100 crore club.

For a normal Mallu buff like me , the above statement sounds like a claim gone overboard. But for someone who has been standing in the queues for hours in front of a theatre in Kerala just to get a ticket for Mohanlal’s latest action entertainer, they will easily shake their heads in affirmation to the statement. For Mohanlal’s hunter avatar is storming the box office like a hurricane, and it sis still running to packed houses in over 200 screens of Kerala even after two weeks of release. Moreover the film is also doing very good business in other parts of the country as well. Pulimurugan is directed by Vyshakh, who is known to make blockbusters with superstars like his debut film Pokkiriraja (Mammootty and Prithviraj, later remade into Hindi as Boss, starring Akshay Kumar), Seniors (Jayaram, Kunchako Boban and Biju Menon), Mallu Singh (Kunchako Boban) and Sound Thoma (Dileep). This will be his biggest hit till date.

While speaking to The Hindu, producer Tomichan let out the fact that the Mohanlal-starrerwould become the first ever Malayalam film to earn Rs.100 crore. He said, “I knew that there was a risk involved, but then, that is the way I have always approached all my business. I thought the film had the potential to become a big hit, but I could not have imagined this kind of success.”

However, there are still apprehensions as to whether Pulimurugan, which has been praised for its technical values and Mohanlal’s performance, can gross Rs 100 crores, as it is just grossed a bit more that 30 crores (with a budget of Rs 25 crores) with satellite earnings of more than Rs.15 crore from television and overseas rights. Even Drishyam (also starring Mohanlal), despite getting better reviews didn’t hit the 100 crore mark. But like that James Bond movie title, all we can say is ‘Never Say Never Again’.
