Since this is leap year, we have decided to start the celebrations a day earlier. Hours ahead of the big day, as we ponder how the last half a century has been, we see flashes of a charming personality in almost everything energetic. Ajith is passionate about movies, and also a whole lot of other things. With his birthday just around the corner, here's our bit to honour Thala's interests.

    • Before he could complete school, he had a job in his hands - quite literally. Given his passion, Ajith started his career from a mechanic shed, tweaking bikes
    • So much for his passion, that he is allegedly in possession of a tech savvy helmet, costing at about 25 thousands! Also, Ajith insists, underlines, and highlights the importance of safe riding practice to the word, that he could easily be categorised to be the ambassador for road safety. He could be spotted on ECR quite often speeding on a superbike, completely secure in every detail of his biking gear.
    • Juggling between various passions, Ajith took a sabbatical and propped his career in racing all the way up to the top three in the country. Ranked third in the nation at his peak, Ajith is a proficient Formula 2 racer.
    • While fatal accidents cripple the spirit of most people, Ajith rose above all odds of the accident he had faced, on one of the tracks. He has recovered so well that he continues to aero model, to date. Of the list of his dreamy passions, piloting an aircraft is one too. Quite literally, Thala is above us all.
    • When we are talking about all his expertise outside of film industry, how could we leave out his culinary skills to die for. Not because he is a star, not because he is influential, but solely for the pure love for Biriyani, Thala has a faithful band of loyalists, including celebs, who vouch for the "most succulent Biriyani" they've ever had.
    • The black and white catchy beauties that trended the Internet is yet another interest of Ajith's. One of his limelight hobbies that caught our attention only recently is his interest in being the man behind the lens. From Shruthi Hassan to Appukutti, with his camera in his hands, beauty lies in Ajith's eyes.
    • Although this is near conclusion, this is definitely not one to find its place last in order of priority. Being a philanthropist and a compassionate person, Ajith has funded many good deeds, like constructing houses for his employees, and funding education of the economically poor. But, no advertisement.

He could be looked askins at for not showing up in gala of the glitz, for being fiercely conservative about his personal life, or for being politically neutral. But at the end of the day, Ajith is a down-to-earth common man, who believes and sets and example that his vote is his, and work is different from personal life. A simpleton, a thorough professional, a sincere hardworker, a passionate artist, a responsible householder, and the perfect role model, Ajith is an ideal man. All of this, is probably why, we say Thala pola varuma.

As part of our celebrations for the birthday of the self-made mega star of Kollywood Ajith Kumar we take a look at a list of films in which Thala has combined with other heroes to give some memorable films. It is amazing to see him stand out even when pitted against the giants of the Tamil and Indian Film industries. This is first of a 'Thala Ajith Birthday Special' articles to follow and here we go.

    'Paasamalargal' with Arvind Swamy

In this film directed by Suresh Menon, Arvind Swamy played the role of a young man who is the caretaker of a group of children and Ajith played the love interest of the eldest girl. An interesting trivia is that 'Chiyaan' Vikram has dubbed for Ajith in this film.

    'Rajavin Paarvaiyile' with Vijay

The only film in which the now arch rivals Ajith and Vijay appeared together, one would feel let down for the film did not do well at the box office. Thala and Thalapathy played thick buddies in this one. It is said that Vijay's mother Shobha Chandrasekhar used to send home cooked food which both the superstars used to have.

Ajith was the initial choice for Suriya's character in 'Nerukku Ner' and he also shot for a few days before backing out of the project.

    'Kalloori Vaasal' with Prashanth

Prashanth, the then reigning young hero of Kollywood appeared in a stylish hairdo with Ajith playing the parallel lead with grey shades. The film marked the Tamil debut of the then leading Bollywood heroine Pooja Bhatt. This Pavithran directorial was an average grosser but the solace for Thala fans is that he is the one who gets the heroine in the end.

    'Ullaasam' with Vikram

When Amitabh Bachan began his ABCL the first public limited film production company in India 'Ullaasam' was their first and only Tamil project. The film had Ajith as a brash young man and Vikram in a diagonally opposite soft role and the chemistry between the two was one of the highlights apart from some great songs by Karthick Raja.

    'Pagaivan' with Sathyaraj

Ajith played the role of a desperate unemployed youth who kidnaps a minister's daughter Anjala Zhaveri and right when the two fall in love Sathyaraj a rowdy crosses their path and all hell breaks loose. The cat and mouse game and the confrontation scenes between Sathyaraj and Ajith are a treat to watch.

    'Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen' with Karthik

The mega hit Vikraman film had a rocking performance from Navarasa Nayagan Karthik but Ajith made his dignified presence felt as the suitor of Roja who diplomatically gives up his love for the hero.

    'Kandukondein Kandukondein' with Mammootty

This mega multi starrer had Mammooty, Ajith, Aishwarya Rai and Tabu in the lead roles and by the time Thala had become a big star and fans were a little disappointed that he was not paired opposite Ash but as a compensation he was the one who featured in all the wonderful songs tuned by Rahman which are still favorites.

    'Dheena' with Suresh Gopi

This is A.R.Murugadoss's debut and the chemistry between Ajith and Suresh Gopi who played adopted brothers was one of the major reasons for the film tasting box office success and of course the film gains significance as Ajith came to be known as Thala after 'Dheena'.

    'Asoka' with Shahrukh Khan

Santhosh Sivan's ambitious historical of King Asoka enjoyed more success abroad than in India and there were mixed reviews about SRK's acting too, but the one unanimous praise was reserved for Thala Ajith's performance as the treacherous half brother Susima Maurya.

    'Billa' with Prabhu

When many skeptic voices claimed that Ajith can never match Rajini's performance in the remake he proved them wrong with bringing his own style to the role and Prabhu too made the transition from hero to character artiste with 'Billa' and had many memorable scenes with Thala.

    'Mankatha' with Arjun

Venkat Prabu delivered twist after twist in one of the biggest hits of Tamil cinema and Ajith and Arjun formed a great combo first appearing as enemies and only in the very end revealing that they are partners in crime. Every interaction between these two is whistle worthy. The crowd went berserk when Arjun addressed Ajith as Ajith as 'My Dear Thala', in the climax. Ajith also addressed Arjun as Action King in an earlier part of the film.

    'Aarambam' with Arya and Rana

Ajith once again played a role with grey shades and his scenes with Arya the reluctant hacker was responsible for many a humorous moment in the film. As a bonus top Telugu star Rana too had a cameo as Thala's best friend.

    'Yennai Arindhaal' with Arun Vijay

Gautham Vasudev Menon cast Ajith as a stylish cop and then pulled of a casting coup by bringing in Arun Vijay as the main antagonist. Though the film was criticized of being a replica of Gautham's earlier cop films. The combination scenes between these two actors made carried the punch required for an interesting hero-villain stand off.

Arun Vijay has still not stopped raving about how Thala helped him during shooting and gave the all important push to his career graph.

When Thala dared to be different - Ajith Birthday Special Slide show

Every other commercial star would have done something unique and different going out of their safe zone of regular masala entertainers. Thala Ajith Kumar who remains the 'King of Opening' in Tamil commercial mainstream cinema for many years now has dared to be different in many occasions in his career that nears a quarter century.

The 'difference' we are referring is not just limited to the roles he has taken but various other aspects that a normal film star would hesitate to voluntarily accept or allow in his films.

In this second slide who of 'Thala Ajith Birthday'Special' series, Indiaglitz brings you the list of such moments when Ajith dared to be different on screen.

    Aasai

After making his debut as the male lead in 'Amaravathi', Ajith has been acting as lead or one of the lead actors in his next few films. In 'Aasai' directed by well established and highly acclaimed filmmaker Vasanth and producer by Mani Ratnam, Ajith was offered a role which ofcourse had the traits of a regular hero.

But his character in the film had lesser screen time and scope when compared to the villain Prakash Raj, heroine Suvalakshmi and her father Poornam Viswanathan.

Despite this Ajith managed to win accolades for his earnest performance as a kind-hearted boy-next-door who is sincere for his love and treats his lover with dignity. This is also Ajith's first genuine super hit.

    Vaali

Tamil cinema has seen many villains emerging as heroes but it is a rare phenomenon where a hero dares to act as villain. This involves the question of compromising the actor's do-gooder image in the minds of audience. Those who have dared to do this at the very early stages of their career are even more less in number and Ajith is one among them.

In 'Vaali' Ajith played a deaf and dumb person who lusts for his twin brother's wife. The towering performance of Ajith in his first negative role that too as a mute person, won huge praises and this film stills remains one of the best of Ajith so far.

    Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen

Today we get to see many Kollywood heroes making cameo appearances in the films of their peers. This supportiveness was not so common during the formative years of Ajith. When he was getting settled as a bankable star Ajith had no qualms in playing a lovable guest role in Karthik-Roja starrer 'Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen'. Ajith acted as the one who diplomatically gives up his wedding plans by sensing that his fiancee's true love is for someone else.

Ajith added some brownie points in his career with his charming performance in the limited screen time he got in this blockbuster directed by Vikraman.

    Kandukondein Kandukondein

When this film was announced it got instant attention thanks to the casting coupe. The film directed by Rajeev Menon involved some really big names of Indian film fraternity. The film released at a time when there was literally no space for multi-starrers in Tamil cinema. Ajith who enjoyed a good deal of popularity and fan base by that time, acted as one of the three male leads in the film. Contrary to general expectation, Ajith was not paired up with Aishwarya Rai and played an aspiring filmmaker who falls in love with Tabu who is relatively less popular among the audience.

Ajith's decision to accept such a role in such an unusual film was praised by audience and critics.

    Citizen

This is a usual commercial mass-hero flick but the film finds it place in this list because of the multiple getups sported by Ajith in this film. Kamal Haasan was the only main stream hero known to go in for multiple makeovers in a film, undergoing rigid and lengthy makeup sessions until then.

Ajith followed Kamal in this film as he appeared as a fisherman and in various other getups of a person disguised as an old freedom fighter, a thin bureaucrat and an obese politician.

'Citizen' despite failing to become a huge box office hit remains as one of the favourite films of Thala fans and a film that stabilised Ajith as a performance oriented actor.

    Ashoka

Ajith has never hesitated to act as the baddie. After Rajinikanth and Sathyaraj he is the actor who has many fans for his capability to pull of ruthless negative characters. In his first and only Bollywood flick and historic flick Ajith acted as Susima Maurya, the treacherous half brother of King Asoka played by Shahrukh Khan.

Ajith's act as the vengeful villain in this mega budget period flick directed by Santhosh Sivan received wide appreciations form pan-Indian critics.

    Mugavaree

After establishing himself as a mass action hero with films like 'Amarkalam' Ajith returned to the soft hero role with this film. He played the lead role of an aspiring music director who compromises his ambition for the welfare of his family. The role was more of a guy next door with limited heroic attributes.

Ajith's decision to act in such a film paid off well critically as well as commercially. This is considered as one of the best performances from Ajith and also helped him have a huge reach among family audience.

    Villain

Very few heroes have successfully depicted the role of a mentally challenged person and Thala fans can be proud that there matinee idol is one among the select few. Ajith played twin brothers- the elder a Robin Hood kind of character while the younger is a mentally challenged, living in an asylum.

Ajith's performance in this challenging role was impeccable and hailed by critics and audiences. The stupendous success of the film helped Ajith stabilize his career after a series of flops.

    Varalaru

After 'Villain' Ajith struggled for years to get a genuine hit and he got the much needed break only when he teamed up again with commercial king director K.S.Ravikumar for the second time after 'Villain'.

Ravikumar apart from penning an out and out commercial entertainer also made excellent use of Ajith's performing abilities. He had writted three characters for Ajith, one among which is a effeminate person. Ajith initially hesitated to take up the role as it has the nefarious potential of spoiling his image, if his performance is not well received by audience. But the Ravikumar who has a grip over the pulse of the audience successfully convinced Ajith and made him perform the most challenging and boldest role of his career with finesse.

'Varalaru' was one of the biggest blockbusters of Ajith's career.

    Billa

Remaking other language films has been a common phenomenon in Tamil film industry over the years. But remake of a yesteryear super hit Tamil film is something which is rare. When a bold producer and a talented filmmaker decided to remake the Tamil blockbuster 'Billa' in the same language after two decades, Ajith's name was suggested as a fitting replacement by none other than Superstar Rajinikanth who played the lead role in the original.

Ajith accepted the role and contrary to skeptical observations came up with a brilliant performance as a stylish and suave don.

The success of the film prompted for its prequel 'Billa 2' which did not do well at the box office, despite Ajith's chilling performance as a ruthless 'don in the making'.

    Asal

This is a regular commercial film that unsuccessfully tried to capitalize on Ajith's stylish avtar that was well established among audience due to 'Billa'. Still the film finds a mention in this list because Ajith acted in dual roles in the film and one among them is that of an old billionaire in death bed. The film was produced by Sivaji Productions and this particular role of Ajith was modelled on the legendary Sivaji Ganesan. Ajith successfully managed to pull off the intended majesty and aura of the Nadigar Thilagam.

    Mankatha

Months before the release of this film, Ajith took the bold and highly acclaimed decision of dismantling his fan clubs. Ajith played a ruthless villain who would do anything for money, in this landmark 50th film. He also appeared in his natural black and grey hairstyle and this is successfully made it as a style statement, as people fondly refer to this as 'Salt & Pepper'.

Ajith made 'bad' lovable, with his performance in the film and he also broke the strongly established do-gooder image of a commercial film hero. The film turned out to be a huge blockbuster.

    Yennai Arindhaal

This film marked the long expected combination of Ajith and Gautham Menon. The film did fulfil the expectations related to stylish filmmaking and acting, generally associated with its director and hero.

Apart from this, thanks to the progressive approach of Gautham and boldness of Ajith, the film portrayed a virgin hero falling head over heels for a divorced woman with a child. The matured love between her two characters played beautifully by Ajith and Trisha, was adorably and dignifiedly captured by Gautham's writing and execution.

Ajith would even become the step father of his lover's kid and voluntarily accept to not have a biological child of his own, something generally considered as a quintessential trait of masculinity.

These are the things that none of a regular commercial hero would allow in his films and it takes a person like Ajith to inculcate these progressive values among the mass audience.

This makes Thala Ajith as someone special and more likable than others,.
