Akshay Kumar's Airlift Will Make You 'Proud to be Indian'

Akshay Kumar, who plays Kuwait-based businessman Ranjit Katyal in the movie, wrote on Twitter: "A true story that will make you #ProudToBeIndian". Directed by Raja Krishna Menon, Airlift also stars actors Nimrat Kaur and Purab Kohli. The film is slated to hit the screens on January 22, 2016

Airlift, starring Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur, is based on one of the most successful rescue missions carried out by India during the 1990 Kuwait War. 1.7 lakh Indian citizens were saved from war-torn Kuwait and were safely brought back home. The story was inspiring, but 26 years later not much is known about the real heroes who took part in the mission, partly due to the lack of a media frenzy.

According to Raja Krishna Menon, the director of Airlift, in a Reuters interview, two men known as Sunny Mathews and Vedi started an unofficial committee to save Indian citizens residing in Kuwait. Akshay Kumar's character, Ranjit Katyal, is an amalgamation of the two men who came up with the idea.

Early Friday morning, the day Airlift was to be released, Rhea Matthews posted a special message on Facebook dedicated to her grandfather, Sunny Mathews.

"Today 'Airlift' releases, a movie based on the largest civil evacuation (Indians based in Kuwait) during the Iraqi invasion in 1990. Akshay Kumar's leading role is based on a few people such as my grandfather, who facilitated the evacuation of nearly 170,000 Indians and brought them safely home. My grandfather stayed through the turmoil of it all and put his life at risk to secure safety for all those he could help. He is a great man and through all his success has always stressed on the importance of humility, gratitude and love, especially to those not so fortunate. An inspirational icon who has touched the hearts of many and lived a life of service. I wish I could even be half the man he is. He may not have many years left but through this movie, his legacy will live on and for that I will be forever proud."

According to Ashoke Sengupta, the man put in charge of the Indian Embassy in Kuwait, Mathews was an extremely resourceful Indian working with Toyota. He did a great job negotiating with private bus operators for evacuation via Iraq to Jordan by road.
